Are Pigs Scared of Bears?

Sasquatch is Anti-Social . . . But Sharing is Caring

The pigs have become well aware that there is a bear roaming on the property. They have been acting really weird lately. After walking right by me this morning when I came out to feed them, tonight, I couldn’t find them. I actually started to get worried and wondering if they had escaped. After searching I finally found them at the far side of the paddock. But they were definitely not acting like normal. So are pigs scared of bears?

Usually when I go out to feed the pigs for breakfast or dinner, they appear within a minute of me calling them. If they’re not there after a minute, I can at least hear them running through the forest to get to the feed.

But this morning was a bit different. After calling them for a few minutes they appeared, but walked right past me and kept going. Almost like I wasn’t there at all.

This evening was similarly odd. I went to the middle of the sows paddock to feed them. However, after calling for them for at least ten minutes, they hadn’t appeared yet and I hadn’t even heard them huffing and puffing through the forest.

I took their feed, since I hadn’t spread it yet and went on a search for my pigs. At the far end of the paddock I finally lured Eggs out of their nest after a few minutes of calling. The remaining girls appeared shortly.

Yet, their strange behavior didn’t stop there. They once again walked past me and the feed. They proceeded up to the fence line and then stood there for about five minutes just staring into the forest. They were also nervous and jumpy any time I tried to move around or talk to them.

This is definitely odd behavior for them. So are pigs scared of bears? Quite possibly, but I’m convinced a black bear doesn’t want anything to do with my sows. The bear would be lucky if it outweigh my sows, and there are six of them. So I’m not worried about my girls, but they do seem worried about the bear.
