Mountain Lion Kills Pig – Holy Shit

Sasquatch is Anti-Social . . . But Sharing is Caring

On Tuesday afternoon we had a mountain lion kill a pig. We were having a nice afternoon of burning old law office furniture on a burn pile when blood curdling squealing came from the weaners’ paddock right behind the house. I sprinted down just in time to see the mountain lion take off into the woods with Chip in his mouth.

N.B. I was not able to control my swearing so turn the sound down or mute it if you don’t want to hear me dropping S and F bombs all over the place.

I’ve always thought that people take crappy videos of wildlife attacks . . . or Sasquatch. Why can’t they just hold the camera steady and zoom in? Well, it turns out that when the adrenaline is pumping and there is a very large lion staring at you with one of your pigs in its mouth you’re not really thinking about the camera. However, I was able to slow down the video so you can get a better look at the lion and if you look closely you’ll see the pig in its mouth.

Yesterday we found out that this same mountain lion has taken two goats from a neighbor less than a mile down the road over the past couple months. They also chased it away from their Wagyu calves this week (possibly on the day he took our pig).

There are at least three of us currently hunting the lion in our little canyon in Gales Creek, OR.

There is a lot to “digest” from this experience and there will be a lot more videos, photos and commentary coming, but I wanted to start processing this experience. And I’ll start where you should start with any event in your life . . . what does the Bible say?

Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness – who dares to rouse them?

Number 24:9

Not me, that’s for sure!

I have written previously in The Mission, Vision, and Dreams of Sasquatch Wallows about how God commands us more than anything else in the Bible to FEAR NOT. But when you are sitting in the woods, with less than 10 yards of visibility looking for a lion in a briar patch who just wants to eat his dinner, it’s hard not to be fearful.

But two of the greatest names of the Old Testament were not affraid of a little old lion.

Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. Judges 14:5-6

Hey God, I could use some of that powerful spirit right about now!

But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”  1 Samuel 17:34-37

Cool cool cool . . . turns out I’m a pansy . . .

While I’m trying to fear not and be a good swineherd, I obviously don’t have what it takes to be in the Hebrews 11 Faith Hall of Fame.

The sun is about to come up on day three of this fiasco and I’m about to go see if I can track down all of my pigs after the night.
