First Farm School Piglet Dissection

We learned a lot and had even more fun at our first piglet dissection at Sasquatch Wallows. We had seven middle schoolers participate.

Sasquatch started by taking the students on a short stroll through the farrowing paddock where we fed some pigs and saw two day old piglets snuggled up with their mom. We discussed the fact that where there’s livestock there is also dead stock. We had a Socratic dialogue debating whether it is ethical to raise pigs in their natural environment as opposed to in hog barns, even though there is a higher mortality rate in nature.

We returned to the backyard where we dissected piglets that didn’t make it to weaning with Oregon’s Coast Range providing a beautiful backdrop. Students held their stomachs as we located all the organs, discovered which piglets had food in their digestive tracks, and located internal hemorrhages from being crushed.
