Repairing a Farrowing Nest

Tassels has had a rough time with her third litter of piglets. See Tassels’ Third Litter. However, she is one of our favorite pigs and she loves her piglets. Today she took time during a break in the rain to rip off a few more branches to repair her farrowing nest. 

The sows will rip off branches from trees and bushes around their nest. They then use these branches to create a nest and a raised floor that will help them and their piglets stay out of any rain runoff that starts to pool in the nest. 

So far Tassels’ choice of location for her nest has been perfect. While there has been an unbelievable amount of rain since she farrowed, her nest has stayed dry with the help of a tarp I put up.
