Processed Foods in Pigs and Kids

Sasquatch is Anti-Social . . . But Sharing is Caring

You may think the old adage that you are what you eat is a bunch of malarkey, but my recent experiences tell me that it is true. Halloween candy for the kids and commercial feed for the pigs turned both into crazy wild animals. Garbage in does equal garbage out. Check out our recent experience with processed foods in pigs and kids.

First the kids get all hopped up on candy from Halloween. Our kids don’t get that much sugar. We’re not Nazis about it, but they definitely don’t get dessert or candy on daily or even weekly basis. So when our kids get sugar . . . you can tell the difference. Bouncing off walls and huge mood swings dominated our house for a few weeks. That’s understandable and an experience most parents have had.

However, it turns out that processed commercial feed in pigs have the same results. It’s not really a surprise considering the digestive tracts of pigs and humans are very similar.

Most people who know me understand that I am an idiot (if you need proof, see The Idiot’s Guide to Using a T-Post Driver), and like an idiot, I ran out of our normal pig feed of field peas for a few days. While we waited for our new shipment to arrive, I resorted to feeding the pigs commercial hog feed. When fed the highly processed commercial feed my pigs became savage wild animals in a matter of days. They were like drug addicts looking for their next fix at meal times.

It’s completely anecdotal, but I’m convinced that when it comes to what you eat, garbage in equals garbage out. And processed foods are garbage. So we’ll stick with feeding our pigs natural non-GMO whole field peas and whole wheat
