There is a reason why old men used to talk about the weather. Turns out when you are a farmer or rancher your livelihood depends in large part on the weather.
It hasn’t rained at Sasquatch Wallows since March 29 . . . today is April 24, and the rain has finally returned!
This rain should help along the backyard lawn. The grass seed was starting to sprout, but it needs some natural rain to help it really rake root.
The rain should also help the silvopasture blossom.
We let the pigs root out all of the blackberries, poison oak, and vines. When the pigs are done, the paddocks can look pretty bare. That’s because once the underbrush is gone, there are no grasses underneath. We reseed by broadcasting pasture seed to establish grasses. This seed has been needing rain for it to germinate for the past month. Hopefully, this rain will help germinate the pasture grasses.
This is a picture of “Poop Hill”, one of our silvopasture paddocks. It looked brutal the last time we moved the pigs off. But right now, the native silvopasture is ready to burst forth in all of its glory.
